A strong earthquake struck the Granada area in southern Spain early Saturday, August 15, 2026, causing alarm among residents and tourists.
The earthquake occurred shortly after 1 a.m., with its epicentre near Alhendín, in the Granada metropolitan area. Initial reports described the earthquake as magnitude 5.0, while later measurements placed it around magnitude 4.8.
Buildings and vehicles were damaged, with debris and fallen materials reported in several areas. Emergency services responded to numerous calls, while authorities activated emergency measures to assess the situation and monitor further seismic activity.
Despite the damage and widespread alarm, no deaths or serious injuries were reported. The famous Alhambra palace was also reported to be unaffected.
Authorities advised people in affected areas to remain calm, avoid damaged buildings and stay away from facades, balconies, walls and other structures that could become unstable.
The earthquake was felt across parts of Andalusia, making it a major news event for one of Spain’s best-known tourist regions.
